About Roquebrune-Cap-Martin

The town of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is rich in history and lore. It was the place to be and to be seen in the roaring 1920's, a hangout and sanctuary for the rich and famous at the time. The history of the town is felt and seen everywhere, much to the pleasure of history and architecture lovers. The history is very much present in the town's villas and estates and is a reminiscens of a time when statesmen, royalty, writers, and artists all came looking for inspiration and rest. The town is also known for its medieval-style village and castle. The pretty medieval village, overlooking Cap Martin in one direction and along the coast across Monaco in the other, has lovely narrow streets between beautifully restored medieval houses. The castle was built in the 10th century to keep the Saracens out and the castle donjon is thought to be the oldest in France. Much of the contemporary castle was added later by the Grimaldi family, once very powerful in the region.
