Place Garibaldi, formerly Plassa Vitour, was built from 1773 according to the plans of the architect Antoine Spinelli. It is the oldest big square in the city of Nice. The buildings around the square all have arcades. The Place is always pleasantly animated. Shops, cafes and restaurants make part of the place. The square has been renovated in 2007-2008 and since then terraces extending on Place Garibaldi must respect a colour code and a precise type of furniture. At the corner with Boulevard Jean-Jaurès, you will find the well-known Café de Turin. This restaurant was founded in 1908 and is specialized in seafood. On the south side, facing the Avenue de la République, is the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. What we know less is that there is a crypt under the place that can be visited. You can see the vestiges of the Pairolière tower, those of the San Sebastian Bastion and the remains of the Augustinian suburb.
